I'm just a newcomer. I've build a house and trees, earning resources like mad, but can't go on as population stays nil and I've got no gold. How can I get population to come to my island?

Hey Torsten...welcome to Air Islands!

You should be adding to the population with each house you build, unless you destroy a house with people inside.  Sometimes a LIP (Little Island Person) will walk off, but that usually only happens if there isn't enough shelter (ex. house hold up to three LIPs; a shed will hold one LIP).

Sounds like you need to start over...you'll have to build up your resources again, unfortunately. 

Don't worry; we've all had to start over one time or another.
